Why Your Cleanser Matters More in Summer

Why Summer Changes the Cleansing Conversation
When people think about summer skincare, the conversation usually starts with sunscreen.
For good reason. Daily sun protection is one of the most important things we can do for our skin.
What interests me just as much, however, is what happens at the end of the day.
After spending time outdoors, applying sunscreen, sweating, traveling, and moving between different environments, the skin has spent hours interacting with the world around it. By evening, most of us are focused on removing the day from our skin as quickly as possible.
I've always thought cleansing deserved a little more attention than that.
As a pharmacist, I've spent much of my career thinking about systems and how small daily habits influence long-term outcomes. One thing I've learned is that foundational steps are often the most important. They're rarely the most exciting, but they create the conditions that allow everything else to work well.
I think cleansing falls into that category.
Most people view cleansing as a way to remove makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, or environmental buildup. While that's certainly part of its purpose, I've always believed a cleanser has another job as well: preparing the skin for what comes next.
That's especially important during the summer.
Many people notice that their skin feels different during warmer months. It may feel more congested, less comfortable, or harder to keep balanced. Some experience increased oiliness, while others feel unexpectedly dry despite the humidity. Often, they assume they need a stronger treatment or a more aggressive approach.
In reality, I think it's worth looking at the foundation of the routine first.
Summer places unique demands on the skin. Increased sun exposure, sweat, sunscreen use, travel, air conditioning, and changes in routine all influence how the skin looks and feels. None of these factors are inherently problematic. The challenge is that they often occur simultaneously, requiring the skin to manage more than it does during other times of the year.
Clean Skin Is Not the Same as Stripped Skin
This is one reason I encourage people to think differently about cleansing.
A good cleanser should absolutely remove what no longer belongs on the skin. But it should also respect what does.
One of the misconceptions I've encountered throughout the years is the belief that skin should feel tight or squeaky clean after washing. Many people associate that feeling with effectiveness. I don't.
When skin feels stripped, it's often a sign that the cleansing process may have removed more than intended. Healthy-looking skin depends on hydration, barrier integrity, microbiome balance, and skin comfort. When cleansing repeatedly disrupts those systems, the skin may become less comfortable over time, particularly during seasons when it's already managing additional environmental stress.
This perspective is one of the reasons Plantkos products are developed and independently evaluated with skin compatibility, barrier integrity, hydration support, and microbiome friendliness in mind. Healthy-looking skin is not simply about what we remove. It's also about what we preserve.
Why Cleansing Is the First Step in Hydration
This is where I think the conversation around cleansing becomes more interesting.
For me, cleansing isn't the end of a step. It's the beginning of one.
One thing I've noticed is that hydration conversations almost always start with moisturizer. Moisturizer certainly plays an important role, but hydration begins much earlier in the routine.
After cleansing, the skin is clean and receptive. It's also the moment when hydration and support become especially important. What you do in the minutes that follow can significantly influence how your skin feels throughout the day.
That's one reason I became interested in hydration layering and why Replenishing Essence became such an important part of the Plantkos system.
Applied after cleansing, it helps provide lightweight hydration while preparing the skin for the rest of the routine. In clinical evaluation, Replenishing Essence demonstrated a 47% increase in dermal hydration within 10 minutes of application.
While hydration is often discussed as a cosmetic benefit, I tend to think about it differently. Hydration helps support many of the processes that contribute to healthy-looking skin and skin comfort.
A Different Philosophy Around Cleansing
This way of thinking has influenced every formula we've created at Plantkos.
Rather than focusing on how aggressively a product can work, we've always been more interested in how well it supports the skin's natural function.
I've never believed skincare should constantly challenge the skin in pursuit of results. In many cases, healthy-looking skin comes from supporting the systems already working to protect it.
That philosophy is reflected in our Gentle Exfoliating Gel Cleanser. Designed for daily use, it gently removes impurities, sunscreen, and environmental buildup while helping maintain skin comfort and balance.
The goal isn't to leave skin feeling stripped.
The goal is to leave it feeling prepared.
The Foundation of Healthy Summer Skin
The longer I work in skincare, the more convinced I become that healthy skin is rarely built through intensity.
More often, it's built through consistency and thoughtful daily habits.
Summer can place additional demands on the skin, but that doesn't necessarily mean the solution is a more complicated routine. Often, it means paying closer attention to the foundational steps that support skin health every day.
For me, cleansing has always been one of those steps.
Not because it's the most exciting part of a routine, but because it influences everything that follows.
When cleansing is done thoughtfully, hydration performs better. Skin feels more comfortable. The routine works more harmoniously.
That's why I believe healthy-looking summer skin begins with the right foundation.
