Why Your Skin Feels More Sensitive in Summer
By Sejal Patel, PharmD
One thing I've noticed over the years, both personally and through conversations with patients, customers, and friends, is that people rarely describe their skin as dehydrated.
Instead, they tell me their skin feels sensitive.
They'll say that products they've used for months suddenly sting. Their skin feels tighter than usual, more reactive, or simply less comfortable than it did a few months earlier. What I find interesting is that many of these individuals haven't changed anything about their routine. They're using the same cleanser, the same moisturizer, and the same products they've always used, yet something feels different.
As a pharmacist, observations like that tend to make me curious.
Whenever symptoms appear without an obvious explanation, I find myself asking the same question: what changed?
For much of my career, I worked in gastroenterology. Although the gut and skin serve very different functions, I was surprised by how often I found myself thinking about similar concepts when I began studying skin health more closely.
In gastroenterology, we spend a great deal of time discussing barriers, microbiomes, hydration, and inflammation. These aren't topics most people think about every day, but they play an important role in how biological systems function. When those systems are functioning well, they help support resilience and balance. When they become disrupted, changes often begin to appear.
The more I learned about skin, the more familiar those conversations felt.
That's one of the reasons I became interested in skincare in the first place.
Has Your Skin Actually Changed?
When someone tells me their skin feels more sensitive during the summer, I don't automatically assume their skin has changed.
More often, I think about what the skin is being asked to manage.
Summer introduces a unique combination of environmental stressors. Most people spend more time outdoors, experience higher temperatures, apply sunscreen more frequently, and move between outdoor heat and heavily air-conditioned environments. Many are also traveling more often, sleeping differently, and operating outside their normal routines.
None of these factors are necessarily problematic on their own. What makes summer different is that they often occur simultaneously.
As a result, the skin may be working harder to maintain the balance it naturally tries to preserve.
I think this is where many skincare conversations become overly simplified. We often reduce summer skin concerns to dryness, but healthy-looking skin depends on much more than moisture alone.
One thing that has always interested me about skincare is how much attention we give to what we can see. We notice redness, dryness, uneven texture, or a loss of radiance, but many of the biological processes influencing those changes are happening beneath the surface.
A healthy skin barrier helps retain hydration and protect against environmental stressors. A balanced microbiome helps support the skin's natural ecosystem. Hydration contributes to comfort and normal skin function. These systems are constantly working together, and when that balance begins to shift, the skin often lets us know.
Not always through a dramatic symptom. Sometimes it's simply the feeling that your skin is no longer responding to your routine the way it once did.
Why More Isn't Always Better
One thing I've observed in skincare is our tendency to immediately search for another solution.
If skin feels different, our first instinct is often to add something. A stronger treatment. A richer moisturizer. More exfoliation. Another active ingredient.
Sometimes those changes are helpful. Sometimes they're exactly what the skin needs. But not always.
In my experience, many people are surprised to learn that skin doesn't necessarily thrive under constant correction. Many of the systems responsible for healthy skin function perform best when they're supported consistently rather than pushed aggressively.
The more I learned about skin biology, the more I found myself questioning whether skincare was always approaching these concerns from the right direction. Eventually, that thinking became part of the reason I created Plantkos.
I've never been particularly interested in creating products that force the skin into submission. I was more interested in understanding how skin functions naturally and developing formulations that support the systems already working to protect it.
That may sound like a subtle distinction, but I believe it's an important one.
Supporting Skin During the Summer
When skin feels more sensitive during the summer, I usually encourage people to simplify before they intensify.
Before changing products, it can be helpful to take a step back and look at the foundation of the routine. Is cleansing leaving the skin comfortable? Has hydration become an afterthought? Has consistency changed because of travel, summer schedules, or time spent outdoors?
Those questions often reveal more than immediately searching for another treatment product.
One area that I think is frequently overlooked is what happens after cleansing.
Most people think of cleansing as the end of a step. I've always thought of it differently.
After cleansing, the skin is clean, but it is also in a position to receive hydration and support. That period immediately after cleansing is one of the reasons I became interested in hydration layering and why products like Replenishing Essence became such an important part of the Plantkos line.
The goal isn't simply to add moisture. It's to support skin comfort and create an environment where the skin can function well.
Featuring rose damascena, licorice root, and rice extract, Replenishing Essence was developed to provide lightweight hydration while helping support skin comfort and balance. In clinical evaluation, it demonstrated a 47% increase in dermal hydration within 10 minutes of application.
While I find that result exciting, what interests me even more is what hydration makes possible. Adequate hydration contributes to skin comfort, supports normal barrier function, and helps create the conditions that healthy-looking skin depends upon. For me, that's where the real value of hydration lies—not simply in how skin looks, but in how well it functions.
This perspective is also reflected in how Plantkos products are developed and evaluated. Our formulations have been independently assessed for hydration support, skin compatibility, barrier integrity, and microbiome friendliness because those are the areas that continue to shape how I think about skin health.
A Different Way to Think About Sensitive Skin
Over the years, I've become less interested in asking, "How do we fix this symptom?" and more interested in asking, "What is this symptom trying to tell us?"
When skin feels more sensitive during the summer, it can be tempting to assume something is wrong with the skin itself. In many cases, however, the skin may simply be responding to a greater number of demands than it was a few months earlier.
Viewing skin through that lens often changes the conversation.
Rather than immediately searching for stronger treatments or additional products, it becomes more valuable to consider the systems that help skin remain healthy in the first place. Hydration, barrier integrity, microbiome balance, and consistency may not be the most exciting topics in skincare, but they continue to influence how skin looks, feels, and functions every day.
That perspective shaped my work in healthcare, and it continues to shape my approach to skincare today.
Rather than asking how we can force skin to change, I've always been more interested in understanding what skin needs to function well in the first place.
That's what we mean when we say Plantkos is Designed to Work With Skin, Not Against It.
If your skin has been feeling more sensitive, reactive, or uncomfortable this summer, consider returning to the foundation of your routine. Gentle cleansing, thoughtful hydration, and consistent support can make a meaningful difference.
